“My wife and I have been talking about going to Machu Picchu for almost 4 years yet never imagined the experience would be as life changing as it was. The experience was rich in every aspect from cultural to personal growth and development; we will get to the details shortly. First, Mike came highly recommended from a friend that had previously done a tour with him. The outstanding service began from the moment we booked the tour. Mike kept in touch via email and was expeditious in answering any and all questions we had prior to our trip. He ensured to give us pertinent information about what to expect, what gear to bring and how the proper ways to lessen the effects of altitude sickness.
He was there to pick us up the moment we arrived to the airport, greeting us with a big smile and ensuring we had everything we needed before he took us to the apartment we rented for the first few days before the trail. Mike and Julio (chef and assistant) took us to our place and carried our luggage ensuring that we’d be comfortably settled in. He then gave us a short yet thorough briefing on what to expect and offered to answer any questions we might have had. He continued checking in on us on the days leading to our expedition. The day prior to our departure we met for an incredible dinner experience and the official briefing. On the first day of the tour Mike and his team (Julio and Guerra) were punctual and energetic. Their happy and energetic vibe was contagious. On the way to the starting point he ensured to stop to allow us to have coffee and a good breakfast to fuel the hike. Upon our arrival to kilometer 81 (starting point) his team, which was composed of five individuals, sprung into action in ways we rarely see people do. They were on task and motivated from the first moment.
Every day was an unbelievable experience, filled with laughs, historical information and conversations that made you self evaluate. We took something important from each and every day. I found myself thinking and discussing with my wife whether this was real or just a surreal fantasy.
Now, lets talk about the food and the porters. Julio is somehow able to provide meals that you would find in a high-end restaurant somehow in the middle of the trail. I can seriously say that we were in awe every single meal. Everything from presentation to taste was simply exquisite.
The porters must be some of the hard working and humble humans we’ve ever encountered. Every day we were amazed by their work ethic and dedication. It made me evaluate my own work ethic and how I can become better at my own job.
Mike’s knowledge and passion for his culture is evident every time he gives you an explanation. Talking with him is a true pleasure. Every day you feel as though you are being let into a secret that no one else knows. You get a real sense that we are all connected and that us travelers are a critical part of the survival/wellbeing of our species. He inspires you to look deep inside for answers and simple be present and enjoy the beauty that surrounds you. I can honestly say that I’d like to return for another tour sometime in the near future. The entire experience was refreshing, exactly what I needed to reset and gain more appreciation for my life and the things that surround me. He cares deeply for the local people and is dedicated to providing good jobs in the community and help those around him make a better life for themselves. His kindness and generosity will leave you feeling warm inside.
The last thing I’d like to share was the fact that on the final day we picked up a tourist from another group (guided by a different company) that was being neglected by their tour guide. Mike was visibly concerned for this individual’s well being and even offered her to spend the entire last day with us, treating her in the same way that he would treat someone paying for his services. I was amazed at what I was witnessing.
I would STRONGLY recommend that you choose Papis Treks for any expeditions to Cusco, Sacred Valley, the Inca trail and Machu Picchu. I can say with certainty that you would be selling yourself short in choosing any other company!”
